dc.description.abstractEsta investigación está orientada hacia un modelo de enseñanza de la matemática que considere las competencias necesarias para el desarrollo crítico y creativo de los estudiantes, en línea con la Ley Orgánica de Educación del Gobierno Nacional de Panamá (1995). Este estudio tiene como objetivo establecer una línea base en competencias matemáticas para las escuelas de primaria de la provincia de Veraguas; se partió de un diagnóstico inicial de las áreas de mayor dificultad en el aprendizaje de esta asignatura. La investigación se apoyó en una metodología mixta con diseño no experimental de una sola aplicación, utilizando un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia con una muestra de 100 docentes que participaron del cuestionario, el cuál fue confiabilizado y validado. Los resultados clave de la investigación indican que los estudiantes presentan mayores dificultades en las áreas del currículo como aritmética (división y multiplicación), geometría y estadística; con relación a las estrategias didácticas predominaron la elaboración y práctica guiada, así como la solución de problemas. Se concluye que es necesario fortalecer la metodología de enseñanza para mejorar los logros en estas áreas de las matemáticas.
